A privately owned Tudor manor house - more manor than fortress despite the name - open for self-guided visits three days a week in season, with rooms left unroped and peacocks roaming the grounds.
Worth the trip
Wandering through rooms that aren't cordoned off, unusual for a historic house at this level of grandeur.
Before you go
It only opens Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in season, and photography is restricted inside; the gatehouse and two B&B rooms can be booked for overnight stays.
Visitors consistently enjoy Gwydir's grounds and its resident peacocks, and several note the building feels more like a historic manor house than a traditional castle. A couple of reviewers found the interpretation inside a bit thin for the price, and one was frustrated by the restriction on photography, but the overall verdict is a beautiful, characterful place worth visiting.
Self-guided visits Wed/Fri/Sun in season; two B&B rooms
“We didn't stay at the lodgings but did a visit as a grounds tour. Which we can really recommend!”- MMP UK, visitor review
